Democracy Game Box (EN, DE, ES, FR, NL, RO)

The Democracy Game Box (D-Box) includes eight printable analogue games, two of which are also available in a digital version. These games are an excellent way to build a bridge between theory and practice and cover topics such as democratic competences, threats to democracy, social divisions. They allow practitioners to create a stimulating and inclusive learning atmosphere and encourage learners to actively engage and interact with others. The games are diverse in terms of duration and complexity. The alphabetical order below also approximately reflects the order of duration and complexity (starting with shorter duration and simpler game mechanics). Shorter and simpler does not mean less meaningful and complex in terms of democracy learning targets!

Harmony Square (available in 18 different languages)

Harmony Square is a game about fake news. The game’s setting is the idyllic Harmony Square, a small neighbourhood mildly obsessed with democracy. You, the player, are hired as Chief Disinformation Officer. Over the course of 4 short levels, your job is to disturb the square’s peace and quiet by fomenting internal divisions and pitting its residents against each other.

Harmony Square was written with an audience in mind of ages 15 and up. The game contains minor references to mild forms of violence (including rude language on a fictional social media network, although no swear words are used), but doesn’t feature content that is likely to be perceived as graphically shocking. While the game does contain some references to real-world events, its scenarios are entirely fictional. Effort has been made to make the game as inclusive as possible, and it can be enjoyed by players from all backgrounds.

List of places with stolpersteine (BS, DE, EN)

List of the roughly 1000 cities and towns that have stolpersteine. A stolperstein is a roughly ten-by-ten-centimetre brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution. Literally, it means ’stumbling stone‘. It is organized in alphabetical order and by country. Where the number of stolpersteine is known or can be approximated, that information has been included, along with the first installation date, if known. Where the number of people deported by the Nazis is known, that information is included for comparison to the number of stolperstein memorials in that city.

Resilience Against Anti-Democratic Tendencies through Education. Competences for Democratic Culture in European Social and Youth Work (EN, FR, DE, PL)

Since the beginning of the millennium, democracy around the world has been confronted with extraordinary challenges. The number of democratic states has been declining since 2005, and even within established democracies, their quality is declining (as observed by Freedom House, 2019). Many countries face anti-democratic, authoritarian tendencies.

In order to respond such developments, in this handbook we focus on competences for democracy and thus on how to prevent and avoid anti-democratic phenomena like authoritarianism, violent radicalisation, extremism, hate speech or conspiracy theories. This material contains a set of new or refreshed educational methods, tailored to work specifically with social workers and youth workers. All of them should help them prepare to counter these tendencies.
